On Sunday July 10th, 1927, Kevin O’Higgins, one of the most senior figures in the Cumann na nGaedheal government was shot and killed by three gunmen on Booterstown Avenue. As the shock of the deed was absorbed by the Irish public, there were fears that the gun would once again shape Irish life. Instead, the political system of the new Irish State showed great resilience and emerged stronger from the crisis of the assassination.
