Join us on UCD’s beautiful campus for a Lifelong Learning Taster Lecture with Dr David McKinney.
Seán O’Casey has a worldwide reputation as one of Ireland’s most iconic playwrights. Occupying places in both literary and popular culture, his work has become woven into the fabric of Irish cultural history, incorporating a deft command of the Dublin dialect and mastery of the comic turn of phrase.
However, O’Casey was an outlier in the emergent Irish Free State, and his work did not flatter the objectives of Irish Nationalism as the country virtually lay in ruins.
This taster lecture will offer a critical introduction to his most famous play, Juno and the Paycock, and makes the case for its cultural and artistic importance in the canon of Irish drama.
